The area is perfect for wild camps with numerous secluded coves and deserted islands with a backdrop of the taurus mountains.Kekova Aktif was set up in the winter of 2005 by Ayse and Dean Livesley. Together they have a wealth of experience working within the tourism sector for over 15 years.Ayse, graduated in hotel and tourism management from Bilkent University in Ankara, after working for the goverment and Sheraton hotel she moved to Kas. Ayse is a Professional guide and leads cultural tours all over Turkey for International and Turkish companies.Dean, first came travelling to Turkey in 1988 and fell in love with the place, giving up his naval profession as a marine engineer. Since then Dean has worked on many touristic projects including the set up of the ‘Lycian Way’ and built and ran the first treehouse camp in Olympos. He is a BCU trained kayak coach and mountain leader and manages and organises all the outdoor events and activities. Dean has also written several guides to the Lycian area.Our seasonal staff are also highly trained in outdoor pursuits and speak both Turkish and English.The Lycian coastline offers paddling all year round in the warm turquoise waters of the mediterranean. Our base is situated in Ucagiz koyu (KEKOVA) with secluded bays, ancient ruins submerged in the sea and crusader castles with commanding views over the rugged shore. We offer a variety of tours, expeditions and courses for the complete beginner to the more experienced paddler.GRADES1 - For everyone, from the absolute beginner to the more experienced paddler.(2-3 hrs paddling) 2 - For the active person, some paddling experience useful but not essential. (up to 4.5 hrs paddling per day) 3 - For the active person with kayak or canoe experience ( 4hrs+ paddling per day) Grades are set to good sea conditions, the guide reservethe right to change the route or tour for safety reasons ie. Adverse weather conditions or illness……..SUPPORT BOAT Support boat is used for all day tours with 6+ customers, on expeditions support boat will be available in case of emergency and to bring supplies if required. Courses are run in the Kekova and Kas area.GUIDE. All guides are sea kayak and first aid trained, will speak English and Turkish and have good experience and knowledge of the region in which one is kayaking.RENTAL. Half and full Day rental will be available from ‘KEKOVA AKTIF’ in Ucagız Koyu, Kekova. For more than 1 day rental a certificate of training should be produced or a2hr safety course must be passed before rental. October through to May generally has good paddling conditions with the occasional storm blowingthrough. Sea tempratures range from 32 degrees C in August/ September down to 13 degrees C in February. Weather and Sea reports are posted daily at the sea kayak centre in Kekova.Lycia is a rugged mountaineous land on the western fringes of the ‘Toros Mountain’ range. The snow melt from the masses of ‘Akdaglar’ and ‘Beydaglar’ stream down through narrow gorges and canyons to water the rich fertile plains of the ‘Xanthos Valley’ and Demre, Finike plains.Lycia has over seventy ancient sites with sunken ports and hill top bastions. Nature being the last conquerer of bygone civilizations left for the explorer’s imagination among the magical vistas of Lycia.Springtime sees an abundance of wild flowers with meadows carpeted with poppies and daises ,and the rare Lycian orchid hiding in the undergrowth. LYCIAN WAY (EAST) 6 Day walking programme using 2 centres at Cıralı/Olympos and Kas.The walking explores the ancient sites of Phaselis and Olympos and the Kekova region plus the chance to climb to the summit of ‘Tahtalı Dag’ (2344m), an ancient mount Olympos with the eternal flames still burning in it’s foothills. There will also be plenty of oppurtunities to swim in the warn turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.(GRADE 2-3) 2. LYCIAN WAY (WEST) 6 day walking programme that starts near Fethiye and finishes in Kas. This tour continues around the coast staying in a mixture of hotel, basic pension and village house accomodation. We will visit the ruins of Kayakoy ( Greek Ghost Town) and the massive ancient port of Patara as well as the ruins of Phellos high above Kas.(GRADE 2-3) 3. CENTRAL LYCIA 6 day walking programme based in Kas exploring a diversity of landscapes from the rugged coastline up to the forested slopes of Akdag. (GRADE 2) 4. ST PAULS TRAIL
7 day walking programme following in the footsteps of St. Paul starting from the ruins of Perge (near Antalya) and ending at the ruins of Antioch in Pisidea (Yalvac). The walk takes in the highlights of the St. Pauls Way, Turkey’s second long distance footpath.5. CAPPADOCIA. 10 day programme taking in the spectacular luna landscape and all the major sites of the region on foot. The holiday is 2 centre based staying in Goreme and Guzelyurt in the south of the region. 6. DAILY WALKS. Using Kas as a base, there are over 20 walks to choose from to discover the beauty of the region.(ALL GRADES) 7.TAILOR MADE ITINERIES.Special walking prorammes made on request for the individual or group.EQUIPMENT. The Terrain is rugged and hard underfoot so walking boots or strong shoes with good ankle support are essential.All the walks are based on carrying a day pack (20litre+ capacity).The region can be very hot from late spring so 2 lıtres of fluid should be carried by each individual. (Dehydration can ruin your holiday!). Sun protection ie. Sunhat,glasses and high factor sun cream. Shorts and t-shirt can be worn but one should not walk around a village with their top off ( RESPECT the local culture!). Walking poles can also be very useful. Waterproofs should be carried early and late season and throughout the winter and on higher walks with an extra warm top. WALKING GRADES1. Walking and sightseeing (up to 2hrs easy walking)2. Up to 500 metres ascent/descent on mainly good footpath and track ( average 4-5 hrs walking) 3. Up to 1000 metre ascent/descent, occasional off path with non technical scrambling. Ropes, harnesses, ice axe and crampons.TOUR 3 - BOZKAYA-KAS ULTIMATE MTBThis tour climbs from our camp in the ‘yayla’(mountain pasture) to the summit of Bozkaya (2100metres) up on the ridge of the susuzlar mountains for great views over the Western Taurus range.Technical descent on dirt road then single track through the forest to the idyllic highland village of Gursu with a break at the local tea house. We rejoin the old dirt road to descend through farmland fording streams into the Kasaba valley. We visit the ruins of an early Byzantine cathedral and pass the head of the Demre canyon guarded by its Lycian tombs and Hellenistic Fortress.From the village of Kasaba a forested ascent takes us by the Felen ravine and the serious climb starts after the village of Derekoy. The route joins into the Lycian Way walking path over the Felen ridge and through the ruins of Phellos for our first views of the sea.Single track down to the village of Pinarbasi then on through Agullu and Bayindir and dirt road descent tour to our finish at Big Pebble Beach for a well earned swim and cold beer!TOTAL ASCENT- 800m TOTAL DESCENT -2600m TERRAIN - A mixture of technical single track, forest and dirt road and minor asphalt roads. SADDLE TIME - 6hours+/- PRICE- 100 euros.INCLUDED:- Day 1 - Late afternoon transfer to mountain camp, evening BBQ. Camp- 2man tent, sleep mat and sleep bag liner.
